¡WELCOME

TO LEGAL!

Legal Committee
The Sixth Committee is the primary forum for the consideration of legal questions in the General Assembly. All of the United Nations Member States are entitled to representation on the Sixth Committee as one of the main committees of the General Assembly.

Topic A: Law of the Sea
Territorial disputes have been present in almost every stage of human history, most of them by land but what people don’t realize is that the maritime territory of each country is as crucial as its continental ones. Not only they connect countries way past their border lines it also helps with the international market and its economic stability. Recently, many territorial disputes of this kind have emerged and your goal is to deliver to the committee and the countries involved a solution following basic legal parameters and strategies.

Topic B: Reforming Peacekeeping Forces
Peacekeeping Forces have been active ever since the United Nations Security Council sent unarmed militant observers to maintain peace during the armistice agreements signed between Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Jordan in 1948. A year later, the Security Council deployed peacekeepers in India and Pakistan to supervise cease of fire, a mission known as "United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan" (UNCIP). Even though peace was maintained as planned –to some extent considered a success- supervision is still needed. Today, this supervision is controlled by local commanders and some UN observers known as "United Nations Military Observer Group" (UNMOGIP). Furthermore, there was a substantial increase in the amount of peacekeeping missions during the “Post-Cold War Era”. To this date, 69 peacekeeping operations have been deployed. Your goal is to maintain the safety and mold the standards that these peacekeepers need to have to enter the forces, that way preventing the disasters that are mentioned in the manual.
